Klean Canteen 16oz Insulated Bottle Review: That Time Of Year

It’s that time of year when the temperatures drop and a mid-ride brew makes all the difference… Klean Canteen’s insulated bottle promises to keep your beverage of choice piping hot and your spirits buoyed.

WHEN I first got my hands one Clean Kanteen’s 16oz (473ml) insulated bottle, I wasn’t completely sure about it. It seemed unduly heavy for its capacity and I wasn’t convinced by the necessity of a hot mid-ride drink. But, within a few days of using it, I was sold on the concept of carrying a small thermos on cold winter’s day ride; as it turns out, a few sips of hot liquid make a real difference to keeping the spirits buoyed when the temperatures plummet! It now rarely leaves my handlebars come November through to March.

The version with the Loop Cap is especially handy, as it’s easy to carry, or you can karabiner it for safe keeping.

Unlike the delicate glass-lined thermoses of old – which features a double wall, vacuum design – Klean Canteens are tough enough to survive multiple, butterfinger drops, or being bounced around on a trail.

Insulation-wise, Klean Canteen claims it will keep a hot beverage, well, hot, for ten hours straight. I’m not sure it’s as efficient as that, but it definitely provides a good few hours of proper insulation, depending on the ambient temperature. For example, if I head out for a chilly night ride with temperatures hovering around 0°c, my brew is still very hot (but not piping hot) a few hours later.

It has a lifetime guarantee; mine is a couple of years old and aside from a couple of small characterful dings, it looks in great shape. There are various caps available; I have the Loop Cap top, which is easy to carry and remains completely leak resistant despite bouncing around in various bags. As for stowage on the bike, I keep my bottle in a stem bag – Oveja Negra’s Chuck Bucket – providing super speedy access.

Last but not least, Klean Canteen is part of the 1% For the Planet group. According to the blurb, the “Klean Coat powder coat finish is 4X more durable than our previous finish and formulated for human and environmental health (Brushed Stainless has no coating). Electropolished interior, a safe & non-toxic process, and rounded corners make it easy to clean.”
